~~Walk Report
Walk No    12590      Leader     Paul Wijngaarden         Date   Sat 13 May 2017    Grade   2
Net Walking Time      5hrs    Attendance   2      Estimated Distance       15km   Climbing 560m
Actual Route  Coalcliff Station – Wodi Wodi track – Forest Track – Sublime point Track – Austinmer Station                           Map Bulli                        Weather Fine calm sunny
Illawarra Escarpment - Coalcliff to Austinmer
The Walk proceeded with just two when the third intended participant reached the Central Platform 2 minutes late and decided, after talking with Paul as the train was leaving Redfern, not to take the next train.
The party was off at 0915 in excellent conditions and quickly needed to reduce clothing layers.
Cars in the Coalcliff car park indicated we would meet others on the track.- a runner completing a return trip to Sublime Point and three other parties including one that had a car swap arrangement in place minimising the climbing content.
We noted an overhang, just off on the upper southern side of the Forest Track at Bulli map 135098 that had potential for   a break with cover. The cliff line in this area shows signs of climber activity. ( At the turn 134098 up a gully we noted a path heading west along the cliff tops which suggested a possible future circuit walk based on Stanwell Park Station, the Wodi Wodi track and back over Stanwell Park Tops.)  The track to the Escarpment crossed flowing water and led to excellent lookouts to the north over Stanwell Park railway viaduct and north east over Stanwell Park Beach and Bald Hill from which, in different conditions, one might observe hang gliders take off.  A little further along the Forest Track at 136096 there were good views south over Coalcliff and towards the Seacliff Bridge.
The track continued south west for a time looking a bit like a fire trail. At a three way junction in close proximity of a tank reservoir, directional signage took us to a more conventional track into the bush. A number of minor creeks were passed  before crossing the much wider Stony Creek after which we noted a fireplace on relatively level ground  123082 on the uphill side suggesting suitability as a camping area. A bit further, an eastern tributary of Stony Creek was crossed at a bridge before the track climbed and led to a lookout at 128081 overlooking to the north the  former Coalcliff mining site.  After 8km the Forest Track finished at Madden Plains track where we intuitively walked west to meet the track to Sublime Point. Here we allowed a family of three MTB riders to proceed ahead.
The 5.8km section to Sublime Point entered from 116066 is not marked on the year 2000 print of the Bulli map. This section was completed soon after our 2011 walk of this track.  The full length runs parallel to the Princess Highway, is relatively flat and provides opportunity for good solid walking. Unlike the earlier Forest track that provided numerous good lookouts from the escarpment, this section provides opportunity for solid walking but fewer lookouts except for one at 096040 which gave a great view over the headlands around Coledale. We reached  Sublime Point at 1340 for a 20 minute partial lunch before starting the descent to ensure we caught the earlier 1454 train back to Sydney. The station is served by one train per hour with parties needing to be clear about whether the connection is a direct service or via Thirroul.
The descent is very steep and features extensive lengths of ladders and upgraded steps.  At foot of the track on Foothills Road the route to the station was left, then right into  Asquith Street, and right into Balfour St to Austinmer Station which was reached forty minutes after start of the descent.
A satisfying walk!
